As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy.

I have gained this from philosophy: that I do without being commanded what others do only from fear of the law.

Weak leaders use others to defend them. The strong fight their own battles.

The monotony and solitude of a quiet life stimulates the creative mind.

Nothing so conclusively proves a man's ability to lead others as what he does from day to day to lead himself.
