What the statesman is most anxious to produce is a certain moral character in his fellow citizens, namely a disposition to virtue and the performance of virtuous actions.

Nothing is more destructive of respect for the government and the law of the land than passing laws which cannot be enforced. 

What is true of the individual will be tomorrow true of the whole nation of individuals will but refuse to lose heart and hope.

Let us all be brave enough to die the death of a martyr, but let no one lust for martyrdom.
